31 Days of Character Development: Day 9

Who does your character trust?

Alissia has some trust issues, as a result of being thrown into court by the Duke. Her circle of those she trusts encompasses the only people she’d call true friends.

The first two are her brothers, Finnian and Caspian. Unfortunately she has not seen them in years, again the fault of the Duke. However, she still loves and trusts them completely.

Next is Sir Brock, her dance tutor. He was one of her father’s closest friends, and she always looked on him as a kind uncle.

Last is Ryan, the stable boy who once was her parent’s ward. They grew up together, and so Alissia sees him as much her brother as Finnian.

Day of Favorites! What’s your character’s favorite

  • Ice cream flavor?
  • Color?
  • Song?
  • Flower?
  • Animal?
  • When Alissia discovers ice cream for the first time, she loves vanilla covered in honey.
  • Green, like her eyes. In a close second is blue, one of the colors of her family’s coat of arms.
  • Onward, an old ditty from the north.
  • Apple blossoms.
  • Fox.

31 Days of Character Development: Day 7

Is there one event or happening your character would like to erase from their past? Why?

The death of her parents.

Alissia’s mother and father were her confidence and protection. They understood her fears of being a queen and didn’t force anything upon her. But when they died, Alissia’s upbringing was transferred to her uncle, who had a completely different idea of how a Crown Princess should be raised.

Alissia dug in her heels, but Duke Aldric dragged her into a world of responsibility and duty. It at once terrified her and angered her, which ultimately ignited her passion for freedom. Over time, that passion burned away the child Alissia once was, faster than anything her uncle put her through.

The loss of her parents was a major turning point in Alissia’s life, and marked the passing of her childhood innocence and faith.

31 Days of Character Development: Day 6

Describe your character’s happiest memory.

Alissia was never able to spend as much time with her parents as she wanted to. Though the family tried it’s best, the fact remained that her father was king and her mother was queen, and they both had important duties to perform.

But there was a time when her family, along with her father’s closest knights, saddled up their horses and rode into the forest together.

They set up a small camp by a lake and stayed there a week. Alissia swam in the lake, climbed trees, caught frogs and built little branch houses with her younger brothers and Ryan, her parent’s ward. Her father and some of the knights taught them to spar with sticks, and her mother showed them how to cook over a fire. Several times her father took her hunting, and in the evenings they lay down together to look at the stars. Alissia would fall asleep listening to her mother point out the constellations and tell their stories and wake up in their tent to start another exciting day.

When they began to pack up to return to the castle, Alissia cried. She climbed a tall pine tree, hugging the sticky trunk in defiance and refusing to come down. Her mother climbed carefully up to her, and instead of scolding her, promised that they would go camping again… if she was good. Pacified, Alissia carefully followed her mother back down to earth.

Her mother died less than a year later.

They never went camping again.

31 Days of Character Development: Day 4

How vain is your character? Do they find themselves attractive?

Alissia is completely unaware of how beautiful she is.

If she had to describe herself, she’d say she was probably average. If you asked her to elaborate, she’d go on to say that her hair does whatever it feels like, her face is too thin, her chest is too small, her height is pretty average, and her feet are too tiny.

Alissia doesn’t care much about beauty. A good day is judged by the dirt under her nails, or how many thwacks she received from a practice sword. Nor does she show any appreciation of fashionable clothing. Her preferred clothes are a plain tunic and sensible breeches.

Secretly, however, she is very proud of her emerald eyes. They are the only thing Alissia feels a hint of vanity for.

31 Days of Character Development: Day 3

Name one scar your character has, and tell us where it came from. If they don’t have any, is there a reason?

Alissia, being a princess, has no reason to have any scars. She does, however, have two.

The first is a small mark on the side of her head, barely visible and easily covered by her hair. It’s the souvenir of a childhood illness, the result of stubbornly trying to scratch away the itch.

The second is a thin scratch on her hand. During her first lessons in archery the point of an arrow had grazed her hand. Like her other scar, she couldn’t leave it alone. When it finally healed, it left a faint line that appears more prominently when her hand is cold.
